About Me

Marissa Cano, Licensed Professional Counselor, MS

There were several experiences that have led me to the field of therapy. From an early age I could see how a lack of resources, trauma, and mental health stigma impacted my community. I wanted to help change patterns that led to people feeling disenfranchised and discouraged. I use my lived experience as a multiracial woman of color to connect with others who may feel othered or unseen in their cultural experience.

My goal in therapy is to help you gain trust in yourself and recognize your unique strengths. I seek to support you in building a sense of empowerment within oppressive systems or challenging situations. What this looks like in the therapy room is me giving information on skills, identifying patterns, supporting you in finding creative solutions, and facilitating emotional processing.  Throughout this process I utilize a person centered, gentle, and active approach.

I have a bachelors in psychology from the University of New Mexico and a masters in clinical mental health counseling from Portland State University. My previous clinical work has included working with youth and families in the community who needed crisis support and a treatment center for eating disorders.

When I am not working I enjoy oil painting, reading fiction, antiquing, going to concerts, and traveling. I love animals and find joy spending time with my dog and two cats: Taos, Opal, and Chunky.
